Using external programs for map layout

Since GRASS is specialized in geographical information management and not in graphical layout, it is often necessary to rework the resulting maps in a real graphics program. Several such programs exist in the free software world, and you will just have to choose the one you prefer personally. We can divide them into those that use formats that you can transform your postscript file into (using pstoedit - see the Section called Editing the resulting postscript file with pstoedit in the chapter called Postscript Maps/Exports), therefore allowing direct editing, and those that can only import non-editable raster files (e.g. PNG):
